Carl’s Jr. Docklands

Carl's Jr. Docklands

Carl N. Karcher, the company’s founder, was born on January 16, 1917 in the city of Upper Sandusky in the state of Ohio. When he was in the eighth grade, he decided to leave school to help his parents with the family farm.

Carl relocated from Ohio to Anaheim, California, when he was a young man. There, he worked at his uncle’s feed and seed shop for a total of 12 hours each day, six days per week. Carl was employed by Armstrong Bakery in Los Angeles in 1939 to work as a bread wrapper. He excelled at his job and was rapidly promoted to a position in sales and delivery. In the latter part of that year, he wed Margaret Heinz, and the couple went on to have a total of 12 children, 51 grandchildren, and 45 great-grandchildren over the course of their more than 66-year marriage.

Carl and Margaret made the acquisition of a hot dog cart on July 17, 1941, paying $326 total for it using $15 in cash and $311 borrowed against his 1941 Plymouth Super Deluxe. The total amount of the first day’s sales was $14.75. The company expanded rapidly, and on January 16, 1945, Carl launched Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue in the city of Anaheim, located in the state of California. In 1956, Carl’s Jr.® held the grand opening of its first restaurant.

Both Margaret and Carl passed away in 2006 and 2008, respectively, leaving behind a legacy that is now expanding all across the world.

Carl was a dedicated supporter of a wide variety of charitable organizations, serving on their boards of directors, and he actively pushed employees of the company he created to get involved in their local communities. He was the campaign chair for the Orange County United Way in 1978 and 1979, at which time the organization raised more than $18 million.

Together with his wife Margaret, he contributed liberally and enthusiastically to a wide variety of organizations. He and his wife Margaret were longtime benefactors of organizations such as the Providence Speech and Hearing Center and the Lestonnac Free Clinic.
