More About Yarra Valley Winery Region

The Yarra Valley, Victoria’s oldest wine region, saw the planting of its first vines in 1838. Plantings persisted until the middle to end of the 1800s, but by the end of 1921, the Yarra Valley had stopped producing wine due to the rising popularity of fortified wines.

Winemaking didn’t resume until 1963, when vines were planted at Wantirna Estate. Over the following ten years, other now-iconic wineries like Mount Mary, Yarra Yering, Warramate, Seville Estate, Chateau Yarrinya (now De Bortoli), Yarra Burn, Morgan Vineyards, and the restoration of two of the valley’s original founding wineries, St. Huberts and Yeringberg, followed.

The Yarra Valley has grown steadily since the middle of the 1980s and is now acknowledged as one of the world’s finest cold climate wine regions. The Yarra Valley can produce exceptional examples of Sparkling Wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Shiraz (Syrah), and Cabernet Sauvignon, our region’s diverse microclimates. The types that have just been described are not the only regional variations.

The Yarra Valley is ideally positioned for a quick day trip and is only a short one-hour drive from the Melbourne CBD. With a wide variety of exceptional restaurants, cafes, and world-class wine, the Yarra Valley will keep you going back for more.
