How much do you actually know about some of the most renowned vineyards in the Yarra Valley, which is known for its mouthwatering cool-climate wines and fresh produce?

We spoke with Dmitri Lazariuc from SOUMAH to find out more about what the vineyard has to offer wine connoisseurs from all over the world including Australia!

SOUMAH’s Profound Past

The Butcher family founded SOUMAH in 2008, although its ties to the Yarra Valley date back as long as thirty years.

“The name is derived from the vineyard’s location, which is South of Maroondah (SOUMAH), in the Yarra Valley wine region’s Gruyere, close to Coldstream. The Butcher family has a long-standing connection to the land and has been present in Victoria for many centuries. The patriarch of the family, Frank Wynyard Butcher, spent more than 30 years working as a horticulture scientist for the DPI, according to Dmitri.

Specialty Wines

SOUMAH specializes in styles and types that are reminiscent of Northern Italy and South-East France thanks to the cool-climate growing conditions that are typical of the Yarra Valley.

Although we do look for modest parcels of premium fruit from other vineyards to bring other single-vineyard wines to market, our Hexham vineyard on the Warramate Foothills is the foundation of production. Our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines have received the most awards, while Viognier and Syrah are also receiving favorable reviews. After that, we developed a love for Northern Italian grape varietals, like Savarro (Savagnin), Nebbiolo, Brachetto, and Pinot Grigio,” adds Dmitri.

Discover the Winemaker

Scott McCarthy is SOUMAH’s head winemaker. You only need to pay attention to the way he discusses Chardonnay, SOUMAH’s hallmark wine, to fully grasp his approach to and philosophy of winemaking.

“Getting everything into the wine (stuffing it with flavor and depth but without edges) is central to our Chardonnay philosophy. Excellent nuances of pure fruit, superb acidity, oak, and mild creaminess. Everything must be included, but it must be done so lightly and in moderation. Scott exclaims, “That is the mark of a new age, linear fresh, Yarra Valley Chardonnay.

A Northern Italian Restaurant in the Yarra Valley

You may expect to savor the fragrances and sumptuous flavors of Northern Italy while dining at SOUMAH in the winery’s Trattoria-style dining area. The chef’s dishes will leave you satisfied but still wanting more because they place a strong emphasis on relaxation and fresh food.

The traditional favorites Bacalao, Beef Carparccio, Vegetarian Orechiette, Tagliatelle with Duck Ragu, Swordfish with Caponata, as well as Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder and Herb Crumbed Pork Schnitzel, have all been produced by our chef. Don’t forget to try our Forno Bravo wood-fired pizzas, which come in both traditional Margherita and spicy Pepperoni varieties, advises Dmitri.

World-class events in a beautiful environment

At SOUMAH, fully catered events are carried out with the utmost style and effectiveness every day. Their event options, as Dmitri says, range from wine tastings to five-course feasts.

At SOUMAH, we can accommodate small gatherings of up to 25 people. From tastings to a five-course lunch that is perfectly paired with SOUMAH wines, we handle everything for you. Our packages are perfect for gathering with friends, family, or coworkers to celebrate life’s most significant milestones. Your upcoming Christmas parties might benefit greatly from one of our event packages, he adds.
